God’s Got This Too

by Allison Dillaberry

Today, as I do every Sunday after church, I went to visit my seventy-four-year-old mother who has Alzheimer’s disease. When I walked into the door, I saw her sitting in a chair next to her best friend Helen, as she often does.

But, this time my mom was weeping. Giant tears and a look of pure despair was on her face.

Now if you know anything about people with Alzheimer’s, they tend to be fairly unemotional because they lose the ability to be as empathetic as they used to be.

So, I was pretty shocked to see her crying. Of course, I went over to her and gave her a big hug and asked her what was the matter.

She said in spotty words, “I am crying....for all the unborn babies.” I really couldn’t understand what she meant at first. Then, I realized that she was watching church on TV, and the pastor was talking about the sin of abortion.

Selfishly, I was happy that she was crying because that meant she could still feel. A little part of the wonderful mama who spent her life helping handicapped children was still there today…

My second reaction, was to cry too about all the unborn babies. Well, because you see I was one of those moms who chose to abort her own baby when I was very young and before I was saved. But that is another very long story that you can find in other blogs on my website.

But today, I realized something very important and said this to my sweet mama. “You don’t have to take that on, mama. Remember that’s what Jesus died for. He took on that sin. Those babies are in Heaven with Him living in perfect peace. And those mamas who chose to abort their babies are forgiven because God loves us that much!”

How easy is it for us to forget three very precious words that can change us forever? These were Christ’s three last words on the cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30 ESV).

There is no more judgment. There is no more unforgiveness. There is no more shame.

How many of us forget that Jesus died to take on all that sadness and sin? My sweet mama forgets about Jesus. She needs reminding that Jesus already took on those sins of abortion and selfishness. We don’t have to feel shame for that.

Sure it’s alright to feel sad about those babies’ deaths, but she needed reminding that God’s got it. And he’s got you too.

So, whatever it is that you are facing. Whatever sin, struggle, sadness, or difficulty you are going through right now, God’s got it. “It is FINISHED.”

Be Blessed,
